How to Promote a Regular Menstrual Cycle

Date Added: Jul 19, 2012

Many women suffer from menstrual cycles that are unpredictable or irregular, which can be more than a little frustrating. An irregular cycle can make it hard to predict when exactly ovulation occurs. This can cause problems with birth control and especially with conception when a woman decides she’s ready to have a family. However, the good news is that an irregular female menstrual cycle isn’t something you have to just learn to live with. There are definitely steps you can take to help promote regularity.

Maintain a healthy weight.

Women who are either underweight or overweight are among the most likely to experience inconsistencies when it comes to their periods. Their cycles may be unreliable, unpredictable, or even disappear altogether. Take care to maintain a BMI that falls within medically recommended limits. Many women find that once they achieve this, their cycle eventually falls back into a natural 28-day rhythm. Women who overdo it when it comes to exercise can also experience inconsistencies with their cycle.

Pay attention to what you eat.

You might be surprised at the extent to which a woman’s diet can affect her menstrual cycle. If you’re in the habit of eating a lot of junk food or processed convenience meals, now would be an excellent time to make some changes. Swap the fast food and empty calories for fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and nourishing whole grains. Also be sure to drink plenty of water each day. Keep caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco consumption to a minimum.

Lower your stress levels.

The female menstrual cycle is very delicate and it really doesn’t take much to throw it out of balance. One of the most common reasons behind cycle irregularities or missed periods is stress. Stress can come from a wide variety of different sources including relocation, divorce, family trouble, or even just everyday worries that can pile up and weigh on the mind. Look for ways you can eliminate (or at least minimise) some of your stressors. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep at night and taking at least a couple of hours each evening to decompress after busy days.

Talk to your doctor.

If none of the more simple solutions work to help you achieve regularity in regards to your menstrual cycles, then it’s advisable to speak to your doctor about it. It’s possible that you may have hormonal issues or other health problems that are throwing your periods off kilter. It’s definitely recommended that conditions like these be identified and treated sooner rather than later, especially if you are trying to conceive. Often, birth control pills and other medications can help balance hormones. Ask your doctor what he or she recommends in regards to your unique body and biological make-up.
