How to Manage an Irregular Period |
Date Added: Jul 20, 2012 |
While a period is often something most women don’t really think much about (beyond it being a monthly inconvenience), it can quickly become a focus of concern if you’re trying to conceive or worried about health problems. If your period cycle isn’t exactly regular, then it can definitely be difficult to tell when you’re ovulating, making conception difficult at best. The good news is that if you are one of the millions of women who have irregular periods, you’re not alone. Approximately 30% of all women actually have the same problem in one form or another, whether that’s a longer or shorter cycle than average or a period that fluctuates from month to month. The better news is that there are easy ways to help regulate your periods more effectively, making it easier to manage them in general, as well as easier to conceive. Maintain a Healthy Weight One of the most common causes of an unreliable cycle of a period is body weight. Whether you’re actively trying to conceive or simply looking for ways to learn more about periods and what makes them tick in general, it’s important to understand that a body weight that is either too high or too low can definitely make it tough to stay regular. If you’re looking to get your period back on track and know you need to make some adjustments in this area, this is a great time to get started. Manage Stress Effectively Another common cause of menstrual cycles that aren’t as regular as you’d hope is a high stress level. A woman’s monthly hormonal cycle is very delicate and it doesn’t take much to throw it off course. Stress can cause you not to ovulate – sometimes for months – which in turn can prevent your period from coming. Keep stress to a minimum and be sure to get plenty of rest and a full night’s sleep each night. Eat a Balanced Diet Never underestimate the importance of a balanced diet! Healthful, nutritious foods and a well-maintained system overall are the key to keeping your body in tip-top condition. This includes in regards to your menstrual cycle. Minimize your intake of junk food and maximize your intake of fruits, veggies, whole grains, and other wholesome items. A vitamin supplement isn’t a bad idea either. Consult Your Physician Every so often, pinpointing why your periods aren’t regular and why you might not be conceiving as easily as you’d hoped calls for a consultation with an expert. There could be underlying causes for your irregular period – such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and thyroid disorders. If you do have periods that seem extra painful, unreliable, or longer/shorter than is normal, definitely ask your doctor about the possible causes. He or she may be able to shed some light on the reasons and recommend good solutions. A menstrual cycle that isn’t regular can no doubt be frustrating, but it doesn’t have to be the end of the world, especially when you know how to go about fixing the problem. |
